El Cerro Pecul, ubicado entre los departamentos de Sololá, Quetzaltenango y Suchitepéquez, continúa siendo afectado por los diferentes focos de incendio que se han producido debido al clima seco que estuvo imperando hasta hace unos días.  Según datos de los bomberos Municipales de Cuyotenango (en Suchitepéquez), Oligario Hernández y Alex Vásquez, el incendio se inició desde el 22 de Enero en el área que pertenece a Quetzaltenango, sin embargo la falta de lluvias en ése sector, favoreció que otros focos de incendio iniciaran.  

A partir de Febrero, terrenos pertenecientes al Departamento de Suchitepéquez y Sololá también comenzaron a ser afectados.  Gran parte de la fauna ha emigrado a otras áreas y mucha área selvática del Cerro Pecul ha sido dañada.   Según las autoridades, una de las especies de aves que habitan ése lugar, el Quetzal, ha emigrado a lugares más seguros, ya que su principal alimento (el aguacatillo) se ha quemado.

Uno de los grandes problemas para poder combatir el fuego es la altura en donde se encuentran los focos del  incendio , ya que el Cerro Pecul (3,537 mts.) tiene terrenos muy escabrosos y de difícil acceso para llevar agua y tratar de apagar el incendio.   Palas y tierra han sido otro de los recursos que bomberos,  miembros de SIPECIF (brigada de incendios forestales) y elementos de la 4ta. Brigada militar han utilizado para apagar las llamas.  Otro de los problemas es la falta de equipo adecuado y personal entrenado para estas emergencias.

The Hill Pecul, located among the states of Sololá, Quetzaltenango and Suchitepéquez, continues being affected by the different fire focuses that they have taken place because of the dry climate  that was reigning until some days ago.  According to the firemen's data of Cuyotenango (in Suchitepéquez), Oligario Hernández and Alex Vásquez, the fire began from January 22 in the area that belongs to Quetzaltenango, however the lack of rains in that sector, it favored that other fire focuses began. 

Starting from February, lands belonging to the state of Suchitepéquez and Sololá they also began to be affected.  Great part of the fauna has emigrated to other areas and wild a lot of area of the Hill Pecul it has been damaged.   According to the authorities, one of the species of birds that inhabit that place, the Quetzal (National Bird), it has emigrated to surer places, since their main food (the aguacatillo) has burned.

One of the big problems to be able to combat the fire is since the height where are the focuses of the fire, the Hill Pecul  (3,537 mts.) it´s has very rough lands and of difficult access to take water and to be about turning off the fire.   Shovels and earth have been another of the resources that firemen, members of SIPECIF (brigade of forest fires) and elements of 4ta Military Brigade has used to turn off the flames.  Another of the problems is the lack of appropriate team and personnel trained for these emergencies.
